I got my varicose veins in one of my legs “done” almost three weeks ago. I got a last minute appointment so I had no time to plan or think about it really. I also had a feeling that it was a very minor surgery (as they were planning on doing it with just a bit of local anesthetic) and that recovery was minimal seeing as they had told me I could continue with my plans for the following day.
So I was not prepared for the fact that actually I was out of action after the surgery. Yeh sure I was able to walk, with a bit of a stiff leg. And actually I was told that I had to take three 20 minute walks a day, for circulation not exercise. But for the first week, that was pretty much all I could do – the three 20 minute walks, and then have to keep the leg up on a chair the rest of the time. Now that was great to be honest, for the first time in about a year (probably since being heavily pregnant on baba no.4 last year!) I got to watch MY TV programmes!
And then after the first week, when you take off the bandages, and the paper stitches, then it loosens up a little bit. And you only have to wear the stocking during the day, so get a bit of relief from it at night, although then the actual incisions hurt when they’re touched off, as well as the bruisings that hurt when touched anyway.
I’m not sure whether its normal or not, but the leg hurts when I’m on it for too long , even now almost three week later. So I’m going between getting stuff done, and getting the leg up on the chair! So I’m not getting enough done of what needs to be done, but I’m trying to get minimum done and then getting down time too. Which as I said is quite nice, because its forcing me to take the time out and catch up and watch tv and relax a bit.
But it was a surprise to me how out of action I actually have been the past two and a half weeks, and it has not been horrifically painful, its more annoying and awkward – but its definitely held up my plans of being super organised and getting decluttering and cooking and cleaning done.
But there’s not much I can do about it, so I’ll make the most of “having” to put the foot up and watch some tv or read my book!
